When children and adolescents participate in the recommended level of physical activity which is at least 60 minutes daily, there are multiple health benefits they are able to accrue. The reality with our youth however is that they do not actively engage in the recommended levels of physical activity, especially during the summer months.
Additionally, research indicates that there are a growing number of children and adolescents that do not understand the benefits of healthy eating. Good nutrition has been proven to minimize the risk of not only obesity but a plethora of additional health challenges. The fitness component will engage campers in enhancing their desire to adopt and maintain a physically active lifestyle. Each day campers will engage in activities such as Zumba, Yoga, relay activities where campers use balls, balloons, sand bags and other items to complete tasks; as well as obstacle courses using inflatable resources.
The nutrition component will provide campers with opportunities to understand the importance of ensuring that the body gets all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed for it to work at its best. Campers will learn the nutritional value of different foods by learning to interpret their labels, and develop a meal plan that encompasses a healthy balance of foods and snacks. Additionally, campers will prepare various smoothies, soups and salads, breakfast and lunch wraps, and other yummy treats that are nutrient dense foods low in calories. At the end of the week campers will leave with their own cookbooks highlighting the recipes created during the week as well as the nutritional values for all of the foods discussed in the camp.
